Self-determination is a right guaranteed to all peoples under Article 1(2) of the UN Charter and common Article 1 of the ICCPR and ICESCR. It is a distinct, foundational principle that must precede any discussions of sovereignty. Only from that basis can a legitimate political solution be pursued. Self-determination is not conditional on Israeli recognition of Palestinian sovereignty or achieved only by a two-state solution--especially since Israel's unlawful annexation continues to erode Palestinian land. Without the guarantee of self-determination, state sovereignty becomes illusory, and any state's security is undermined. That's why the EGP's position must be one grounded firmly in human rights and international law and support only a political vision that respects and upholds the equal and inalienable right of all peoples to self-determination. It is not the role of the EGP, the European Union, or European states to draw borders--especially when doing so would reinforce colonial partitions--or predetermine the political future of Israelis and Palestinians. Doing so would effectively undermine peoples' right to determine their political status themselves. As such, any proposals for one-state or two-state solutions must come from the constituents themselves, not from European states, European institutions, or the EGP.
