Because gender-based killings stem from the same misogynistic and discriminatory structures, the definition of femicide must protect all those targeted by gendered violence. Inclusive definitions ensure that trans, gender-nonconforming, intersex and disabled victims are not made invisible in data or denied access to justice and support. Naming femicide in the Istanbul Convention is essential to recognise the most extreme form of violence against women and to require governments to take concrete, coordinated action to prevent these killings.
